Description History Gallery Long lost and forgotten, the wreck of an old Thames sailing barge lies close to the quay at Beaumont-cum-Moze (moze is Old English for marsh). Heavily laden barges took hay to London for the horses and often brought back ballast. Beaumont Quay was made from the rectangular stone blocks of London Bridge that was built in 1200 and demolished in 1831.

An idyllic spot. One day I must return to complete my watercolour of this relic before nature reclaims her.

With ref: to old Sailing Barge close to the quay at Beaumont this is almost certainly "ROSE" reg. Maldon, Essex. Built by the famous builder HOWARD in 1880. She ended her days of trade as a timber lighter in the ownership of SADD'S Maldon. The HOWARD barges were always admired for their pretty shape. MIROSA and ETHEL MAUD are two others of his craft still around under sail.

Thanks for that information, Peter. I love to see the remaining sailing barges at Maldon and Pin Mill. I was lucky enough to sail on one a few years ago. Magic!
