(2010-06-06) | Hi both, I had to spread my wings one day, and the Cambrian mountains are a pretty good substitute for the Beacons. It's Drygarn Fawr next, so maybe a yank out of the bog might be necessary, so you'd better be on standby. | pab

(2010-06-08) | Hi Rosbriagha. No, I hadn't heard anything about Drygarn Fawr and Stonehenge. I would like to see the research on that one, it sounds interesting. I hope to get up there this weekend, weather permitting.
Incidentally, just to be clear on this, I didn't discover this initially. I believe it was found by "proper" Archaeologists on a field walking exercise about 3 or 4 years ago, although the details may be a little different than that.
I have tried and failed before to find it given the official grid ref's, of which there are several, and all wrong. The last time I went it was a nice day and so I wandered around until it turned up.
There are lots of cairns in the area, and some fine views, with Drygarn Fawr visible to the West. I have submitted photo's of some of the cairns and the nearby standing stone, but they seem to have got lost in the system somewhere. A bit of a theme for this area it seems.
If you do come for a look a nice walk is from the Elan valley visitor centre. follow the reservoir around on it's Southern shore and then head up to the moors. On the way up you will pass a small dam that was blown up in the second world war to test the Dambuster bombs. It's been left in it's ruined condition. A most unexpected bonus along the way. |
