The fort is Iron Age and must have controlled the Stort Valley. The Essex side of the river was occupied by the Trinovantes and the Hertfordshire side by their arch enemies, the Catuvellauni.
Two banks and ditches surround the pear shaped hillfort. The rampart is 2m high in places with very steep descents to the marshy ground by the river. The walls are impressive but access is very limited as the land is now a private estate of big houses and paddocks called Wallbury Dells!

| Posted Comments: saxfish (2004-03-02) | Very interesting, especially as I lived within Wallbury Dells from birth in 1947 until our family moved to Norfolk in 1963. I well remember the annual archealogical summer camps and the interesting finds. I was also one of the few who could pick their way accross the marshy ground below the rampart and make my way to the river to fish and shoot. A wonderful place to grow up in and it certainly gave me my interest in British history. Wonderful site, keep it up | Thorgrim (2004-03-02) | I tried to cross the marshy ground once - got soaked! Very formidable ramparts by the river, but impossible to photograph. | yvette (2005-09-27) | interesting site! i live in wallbury dells and would derly love any old photo s if anyone has any. |
