these are interesting. A site on my " to visit " list. Are these your photo's Thingy.

Cerrig, yes they're my photos but taken some years ago with a very lo-res digital camera. Now that I have a 'flashy' camera and like to get high angle shots that show the entire site from above, I intend to return. The site is on an army firing and training area and very dangerous to visit unless first cleared with the army. Also, I recommend visiting in winter when the grass has not grown over the smaller stones. The cairn and stone circle are only 25m apart, and lie close to what is believed to be an ancient track, probably forming part of an extensive ridgeway crossing this high ground. The area was taken over by the army in 1939 and has not been developed since then. Apart from modern military installations and the odd unexploded bomb, the entire area is exactly as it was 60 years ago. A great place to be! Incidentally, I remember these photos were taken on Easter Sunday (when the army takes a day off) but can't remember what year.

curiously, when i was out on Trecastle mountain a few days ago with Sem, we were discussing visiting this site sometime. I am very interested in the views to the South and East from here, and I hope to resolve a theory or 2 concerning them when I visit.

I love the nonchalant comment Thingy: "Apart from ... and the odd unexploded bomb..etc.!!! So - how many of you intrepid megaraks are going hunting here? Sem will truly be a Saint if he steps on one of them... oh -but I forgot - his feet don't touch the ground! ;-)

maybe we should plan a Portal summer outing. According to "Derek" it's on june 3rd this year.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other pictures of this site (I think I deleted them because they were so awful). From memory, the view to the east is across a valley to an area with field boundaries and dilapidated hedges, once part of a farm also called Ynys Hir. To the south there is slightly higher ground obscuring much of the view. I couldn't remember if Pen y Fan could be seen from here, but a quick check of my digital maps shows it can (20 Kms away). I remember an area of interesting boulders on the nearby hillside to the south east. From the stone circle these appeared to be arranged in patterns by man, but a closer inspection left me thinking they were natural. The ancient track which passes nearby joins another ancient route just 3 Kms north of the stone circle. This second ridgeway extends to the south west to join up with the obvious ridgeway running south west from Y Pgwn on Trecastle mountain. It's an interesting area for us both.

A summer outing sounds good. I'd benefit in several ways: Saint Sem can get the high angle shots from his elevated position; Cerrig & I can hang back at the rear of the group looking after the refreshments; and Angie can go first in case there are any unexploded bombs (ladies first!).

Ha!ha!!ha!!!.... You obviously mean me to dowse for these? ;-) [Wasn't someone in the news for selling such gadgets recently?!!] If I step on anything, parts of me will be forever in those lovely Welsh mountains. :-0

Angie, I did mean to say you would go first, dowsing for whatever you wish but detecting any UXBs that might be there. If you don't set off any bombs with those dowsing rods, you'll probably have someone's eye out! Perhaps there's more to dowsing than meets the eye (poor pun I know, but I couldn't resist).

changing the subject here. Is that your car in the photo? Is it almost possible to visit this circle by vehicle? I was under the impression it was a greaat long slog to get to, and our access rating is only a 1, but I'll admit the firing range doesn't help this.

Yes I think the '1' reflects having to get prior permission from the MOD which is something of a hassle.
What's on June 3rd?

Summer falls on june 3rd this year(unless it's raining)

In answer to the Captain's question: yes, that's my car but I 'bent' their rules by taking it along the ancient track (you need a 4 x 4 & there were reasons other than laziness for doing so). You are unlikely to get permission from the MOD to take a vehicle along the track unless in special circumstances. For example, the MOD might accommodate disabled visitors arriving by vehicle, or permit a vehicle if heavy surveying equipment or such like had to be taken to the site. Otherwise, it's a long slog and, of course, this is a particularly difficult site because of the danger from military activity, making it essential that permission is sought. The MOD is very helpful but they have different priorities to us and will only allow access under their terms.
