Maybe they chose the stone because it looked like wood, and these were some kind of ritual marking by an axe or other implement. The 'cuts' look pink, like severed flesh. On the other hand, they could have been made much more recently.
On one visit a few years ago, it did occur to me that a sacrifice to their gods might have been made, with the person tied to the stone. |
