One of the comparatively rare occasions to admire the site slightly snowbound. This definitely helped to console myself from overclouded sky: Neither sunrise nor sunset were visible from this part of the world. It was very cold and windy on top of the barrow. And then I became aware, that according to the legends solstice night is the first of 12 nights haunted by The Wild Hunt.
The badly damaged 6 capstone chamber viewed from the North-East. 15 (out of probably 16) orthostats are preserved, but partly out of place as a result of historic destruction attempts. 3 capstones are robbed, one is blown into pieces, two are complete, but collapsed into the chamber. Nevertheless a great site. |
