| Posted Comments: Andy B (2004-01-24) | Peter, am I right that the Sphinx is probably of prehistoric origin. Certainly Bauval and his cronies seem to think so. Don't worry Portalers, we're not going to start major coverage of Ancient Egypt, just some of the really ancient (prehistoric) stuff. | Thorgrim (2004-01-24) | Ageless I think. There are theories about rain water erosion which some support and others don't. The sphinx is generally believed to be much older than the Pyramid of Kheops which dates to about 2500 BC. The body was buried in sand until very recently (19thC) and the head has ben refashioned in antiquity. Originally it was possibly a lion which has been recarved to resemble a pharaoh.
To stand before the Sphinx and to enter the pyramids is such an experience. It diminishes everything else. |
