Of undecided provenance, this is possibly a souterrain or chambered grave. Could be later though. |
| Posted Comments: howar (2004-01-08) | His thoughts chime with mine , but having been on The Howe dig means I've actually seen a souterrain built through a neolithic tomb ! Certainly the identification feels inadequate . An 1850's book mentions an old lady being shown a souterrain in the region of Crantit when she was a child . Common with this site is two compartments and a passage going townwards . But she mentioned going down steps , and these are not apparent , though they could easily have later been covered by the hillside . what worries me more is that she told of a chimney , and for my part I cannot figure in one here even given that it is now a couple of centuries later . It was in the 1960's that an OS man placed the souterrain here , though it is more strictly Upper Scapa than Crantit in my opinion . More pictures of the site and a few elevations can be found on TMA for those interested . |
