Pyromantic divinations were normally conducted on tortoise breastplates. Usually, the ancient diviners pretreated by drilling or chiselling on one side of the plates before burning. The burnt breastplates showed cracks on the other side. Cracks on different parts of the plate portended different fates. The diviners then need to give interpretation of the cracks, whether positive or negative. Divination inscriptions, known as 'jia gu wen', on the oracle bones and shells excavated from the Central Plains have received attention since the last century. Bu jia excavated from the Jinsha site, however, are mostly tortoise carapaces (back shells) with no inscriptions at all." |
