The central boulder (the four smaller ones are recent additions) is known as The Navel of the World. This name has been thought to be the name of the island prior to western contact, however it now appears that it is just the name of this site. The stone itself purports to be the ballast stone from the first canoe to land on the island. Polynesian tradition tells us that these stones were used as a kind of passport so that returning voyagers (perhaps generations later) could demonstrate the tribal and familial connections were they to return to their original homeland.
