Picture shows the enormously large innermost defensive wall of a still unnamed and unresearched Hillfort in Lower Austria, somewhere in the deep forest.
The inner wall must have been about 8 meters high - enormous still today, then there was a gate with a deep moat around the inner wall, and a much smaller outer wall a few hundred meters away. The hillfort could only be accessed by one side, so it was perfectly protected.
Hopefully the University of Vienna will start excavations in autumn 2009. It has only been dated into the early bronze age by some findings on the surface, so no exact dating possible.
Several very well preserved Roundbarrows, robbed and intact, can be found in the surrounding region.
Very difficult to find, because it is inaccessible by car due to the forest. |
