It was excavated in 1963, most likely they covered the tomb with earth, afterwards. The given location is more to the western end of this earthwork, but those OFFA locations are pretty inakkurat from time to time. | Martin L (2009-01-28) | Very interesting. It really is hard to judge from this photo, but eventually it looks like the typical pit remaining when a chamber is completly removed. How high is the barrow approximately ? And how deep is the pit seen in this picture? | krautrock (2009-01-28) | On this end the earthwork is approx.3m high. The earth wall is getting higher to the western end and at last maybe 6m-7m high. The pit is maybe between 1m-1,50m deep.I thought the wall is completed later by farmers because there are more eartworks with the same height in this area. | Martin L (2009-01-30) | Thank you! This would leave appr. 1,5m to the level of surrounding ground to hide the chamber. Possible of course. So I hope Holger's theory is right and the chamber is still there. But the fact, that the earthwork obviously has some modern additions (by the farmer) really makes it hard to get any clue. |
