| Posted Comments: cromagnonman (2008-12-28) | I heard recently that there is now a distinct difference between a Quoite and a Dolmen. A typical Quoite would be Lanyon Quoite, which consists of a large flat slab placed on top of several uprights with large spaces between them. Probably originally covered over with a mound of earth.
A Dolmen or Portal Dolmen differs from this. The uprights are much closer together and create a small entrance or even false entrance to the chamber inside. Chun, seen here, should therefore be described as a Portal Dolmen, not a Quoite. Other Portal Dolmens wrongly described as Quoites include Trethevy, Mulfra and Zennor.
I believe this re-classification is the result of a fairly new realisation that these sites can be divided into two distinct but different groups. |
