On the reverse of the postcard showing the outline drawing of this stone ('Drawing reproduced by kind permission of B.J.N. Edwards') is the following:
"The carving of an angel is an example of early Christian art and was found in the village. It dates from the Viking period (900 AD). The unusual boots worn by the Angel have a tongue at the front and back; only the carving from St. Vigean's in Scotland shows similar footwear being worn by Ecclesiastics."
Slaidburn is in Lancashire, on the eastern edge of the Forest of Bowland. |
