|Description ||Jim's mention of Dr Syntax's head prompted me to search though some of my old pictures this dull damp August afternoon, rather than being out searching for the real thing. |
This is Dr Syntax's head, which gives its name to that part of Lands End.
Should I be seeing a nose mouth and large chin in the silhouette?
Its the whole head and shoulders, forehead leaning on the rocks to the right, eyes, nose, mouth and large chin in the central gap. The doctors wig, spectacularly clad in lichens is clear to the top and left.
A picture from 1927 can be seen here, http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/cornwall/land%27s+end/photos/land%27s+end_79984.htm and from 1890 here http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/cornwall/land%27s+end/photos/land%27s+end_27723.htm
I don't know whether the head was originally atop the rock to the left.
For a picture of the Dr Syntax himself, see here http://www.esmerel.com/images/syntax.jpg
I see it now!
With all the lovely weather the last couple of weeks, and inspired by seeing Jim's pictures (and digging this out) I decided to spend a weekend down in Penwith, and search out Dr Syntax again.
Unfortunately, the health and safety brigade made my task impossible, with all the cliffs around Land's End now being fenced off, so I was unable to hunt down Dr Syntax again.
