Description Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been developed as a fantastic money-spinning tourist attraction.

That river Axe is a different one to the 'gravels of the river Axe at Broom on the Devon/Dorset/Somerset border' .... where 2500 hand-axes were found, isn't it? (See item on Royal Albert Memorial Museum site page).

Axe in this context means 'Fast flowing'. I guess Exe (as in the river through Exmoor, Exeter and Exmouth) is much the same.

What I meant was, 'Which River Axe does Broom stand on?' I wondered if it was on the same River Axe that flows through Wookey Hole Caves, or whether the River Axe in south Devon, near Axminster, was the one where Broom is situated?

I got the following from wikipedia:

* River Axe, Devon, flowing south through Axminster to the English Channel near Seaton

* River Axe, Somerset, flowing west from the Mendip Hills to the Bristol Channel near Weston-super-Mare

Ah.... so I was right in first comment, then. The Wookey one rises too far north. It just think it's odd that there are two rivers so close to each other with the same name. Though I suppose the Avon rivers are fairly close too.

And the Exe is only one letter different!
