| Posted Comments: PeterCrump (2003-11-19) | Today (15th June) I took the dog and my camera for a walk up to the Druid's Temple at Ilton, thinking I'd get some cool photos. The weather was beautifully sunny and very warm. Unfortunately the place was swarming with hikers and children who thought the place was an adventure playground. The photograph is a stitch-up of four separate exposures. To combat the problem of several gaudily-clad hikers in each frame, I waited until they moved around the folly and took photographs of the places that they didn't happen to occupy. I stitched together those shots that included fewest annoying humans. I still had to eliminate several of the more static hikers digitally, though, including a couple who were originally in the middle of this shot.
The spot is popular with pagans and goths, as the following from Baroness Masham of Ilton (quoted in Hansard) demonstrates:
"A few miles from Masham, on the estate, is a realistic copy of a druid temple, with all the stones, including the sacrificial stone, in the correct positions. One Sunday afternoon, my secretary was going for a walk with a friend when she found a pig's head sitting on the altar, which gave her a terrific shock. It is thought that there has been devil worship there.
"On another occasion, I had to leave home early one morning. Just outside Masham, I found a small group of Leeds University students who had spent the night at the druids temple. They were cold and frightened. With the night shadows and the country noises, such as owls hooting, they had fled. As I was going towards Leeds, I gave them a lift. They told me that they had had a terrible experience.
"Another incident at the druid temple was a large gathering of people from Manchester who took over the place for the whole night in order to have a rave. They tore gates off their hinges and broke down trees to make a huge bonfire. The police were called and with the gamekeepers, could only watch at a distance. It was only after a fight had taken place within the group and one of the people had been taken to hospital with severe injuries that the rave subsided. When my nephew visited the site the next day to inspect the damage, he found half-burnt probation orders and such discarded documents." | lee brotherton (2005-06-23) | druids temple. What a fantastic place, i get a sense of ritual practice when meditating however ilkley moor circle seems to be more the real thing, but as always we have the wonderful romans to blame for the desicration of this spine tingling structure which used to be 20 stones i believe, but now just the twelve apostles! i really wish that this site was still in tact what a trully fantastic place. also close by in bingley there is druids alter another fine place to reflect upon ones course in the universe. I think that its a shame that pagan traditions have been lost through the arrival of the roman catholics.wht are all these circles for?. | leebro1@hotmail.com (2005-06-23) | this is lee brotherton, spiritualist named peace. please if any one has any information about stone circles and there uses please contact me and let me know.cheers |
