Description On the way home from Hahnheide, I made a short visit to Ohe. Idwal had shown the location of the 'Schalenstein', and I wanted some pictures.
First off, I was very disappointed about how little you can see of that sun symbol. It was a cloudy day, but this cannot be the reason. I had seen those fantastic pictures on www.ur-bild.de.
Is it just the morning sun that gives such a different picture, or has the stone been 'cleaned' in such a way that the carvings are almost invisible now ?
I have read about such regarding the 'Schalenstein' of Bunsoh, that really has been treated with a steam cleaner, in an effort to free it from dirt.

it is amazing how different this stone looks to those other pictures, which show all the makings so clearly. I know from first hand experience how much difference the light can make, but this does look a bit too clean and uniform.

Sadly there is another explanation for the disappointing appearance. I was at a meeting of the prehistoric archaeology working group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Vor- und Frühgeschichte) for Kreis Stormarn, the local district, last week where it was reported that the local council had found some spare money last year. They replaced the shelter covering the stone but also used a high pressure jet to clean the stone and in so doing almost completely destroyed its apearance!!
A photo that I have from 1999 shows the cup marks and the sun symbol clearly.

Unbelievable, Idwal. Such a rare carving. (I mean for Schleswig-Holstein)
And what was the reaction of the working group?
