Does anyone know why it's called the murder stone?
I wonder if there is confusion here. I believe that there are two so called "murder stones" left in this country. One is in Mansfield the other is between Whaley Bridge and Disley very close to where this monolith can be found. The other murder stone looks like a headstone and is clearly inscribed marking the murder of a William Wood of Eyam.
I agree that "the murder stone" is an incorrect name for this stone, unless anyone can show otherwise. The murder stone is a more modern inscribed stone several miles away. Vicky, where did you get the name from?
