(2009-08-13) | What became of all the stones that have toppled or disappeared ?

(2011-05-11) | Unfortunately, many of the Stones were not buried very deeply into the chalk. This probably had to do with the length of the raw stone found at Marlborough Downs and how high they pre-determined they would wind up being. Many have fallen over the years, some in recorded times. Those that could have been restored since 1901. The last Restoration was in 1964.
Five of the Sarsens and many Bluestones and lintels have disappeared completely over the years, probably looted for barn foundations or stone walls in the area. |
