What is the Outer ring for ? ( the ring dug into the ground, the one which goes within approx 2cms of the bottom of the picture and goes nearly all the way round the stones ). It looks like it "starts" next to what looks like a stone laid on the ground, facing the stones.

The Outer Ring is the "Henge Dike" and is thought to set the site apart from the domain of the normal landscape. There are over 900 henges in the UK, though this one is unique, in that the fill is piled on the inside - unusual.
The main entrance to Stonehenge, like many other henges, is oriented to the Summer Solstice. The Stone lying there on the ground was one of originally three that stood upright. They were Solar Alignment Stones Now called the "Slaughter Stone" it is the only one that remains.
Seen at the extreme bottom right in this shot we see the so-called "Heel- or Helio-Stone". There were originally two of them. The Sun rose on the Summer Solstice and its beams passed through these two Stones, peened across the top of the center Slaughter Stone, then on through the NE aperture to splash across the face of the so-called 'Altar Stone', nestled in the heart of the formidable Trilithon Set, inside the Stone Circle.
