Having been here numerous times in my youth, the views, and wonderful smell of pine is nostalgic for me; and now it is interesting from my stoney fascination perspective. Grid ref SY893925. Parking nearby is easy, and a steady walk makes this fine for walking with a family. Our 5 and 3 year olds handled it fine, taking about 1 hr 15 at a very slow pace to do a circular route. The views from the top, near the trig point can almost fool you that you're miles from nowhere! (Take a look to the east - you can see a huge water tower, which gives the name for the Tower Park leisure complex). Though forested by human design, you can also feel the fort is removed in time. When I last visited about 9 years ago now, trees were growing on the top, and on some of the ramparts. These are now removed, leaving the views clear. I also became aware that the trees on the N and S sides of the fort had ridges in them, making me wonder if some ramparts extended into the present tree line. On the W / NW side, there are a curious group of lumps & bumps. This picture showing the SW side, with some of the mentioned possible ramparts in the trees. |
