Contact them for permission to reproduce it. |  | | Description | This supposed Celtic Head lies to the rear of the Church in Rostherne near Knutsford at SJ743837. It is carved into a block of sandstone and has either hair or horns on either side of its face leading to speculation that it may be associated with Cernunnos, the horned god. It was reputedly pulled out of the nearby Rostherne Mere which reputedly has a mermaid and may have come from a shrine. |

(2005-04-30) | This stone was part of the church tower which fell down in the middle of the eighteenth century, possibly a pagan object incorporated into the original church. | Ingham
(2005-04-30) | I have spent many hours researching the head, after falling for her spell in the late eighties whilst working for the Gtr. Mcr. archaeological Unit. Rather than Cernunnos I would lean to Coventina, a water goddess. An antefix (decorative roof tile) was found in northumberland which looks very like Rosthernes head. |
