It may look like a Byzantine church (which it became), but it started out as a temple to Isis and other Egyptian Gods when it was built under Hadrian. Its restoration is being financed by the German travel company, among others, which then has permission for special guided visits in what is otherwise a closed archaeological site for the time being. |
