Weather permitting, and looking along the curious passageway leading to the large entrance way halfway up the tower wall, a dramatic sunrise can be viewed at the Winter Solstice.
The geometry of this puzzling tower supports the idea that it was used in part as a solar observatory. Midwinter sunrise orientations can also be detected in Neolithic rock art leading to the suggestion that the MT was constructed with traditional Azeri ‘cupmark and gutter’ orientation design in mind. |
