A number of so called ‘dragon ditches’ may be found in Azerbaijan. Folklore tells they were made by the tail of a dragon crossing over the land. Their origins and function are mysterious. At around 20 m wide, some can be seen by satellite in Google Earth where they be measured in kilometers. We can discount use as a canal as they climb up and down hillsides. Boundary markers are a possibility but are rather extreme form of a territorial marking. The manpower needing to build the features would have been considerable and suggestive of a past powerful ruler or for religious reasons a large motivated workforce. Low points are filled with soil that suggests they are not of modern vintage.
I would welcome comments on possible functions.
