I showed it to a geology major who guessed that these were fossils of ancient sponges called stromatoporoids. But I've never seen fossils like these on the Internet or in any book. I also noticed a remarkable similarity between these disks and some cup and ring carvings. Note especially the two disks at the bottom of the photo which appeared to be joined by a bridge pattern.
The disks are grooved into the rock, though not as deeply as many cup and ring carvings appear to be.
Would anyone hazard a guess as to whether these are fossils or carvings? |
