Troy Town Maze.
I first came to this site in 1968. Then the labyrinth was in good condition, the location wild and lonely with only Troytown Farm nearby. The path to the centre was a magical experience and I did it by the light of the full moon.
Now, the maze is overused, kicked about and sad. In December 1988, dowsers controversially "restored" it and now it just doesn't work. The restoration also destroyed the archaeology and so now we shall never know how old it is.
This maze is unique in Britain, but there are similar labyrinths on remote Scandinavian islands with similar names - Troborg, Troja, Trojeborg etc. Also the design is quite difficult to execute and quite beyond the powers of visitors who have made their attempts nearby.
The argument for comparative modernity is that it was made by a bored lighthouse keeper in 1729. Well, he must have been a clever chap. On the other hand, there is a tradition elsewhere that shepherds cut turf mazes for fun - the Shepherd's Race.
This is a place that I love and because of that love, I just cannot bear to go there anymore.

(2005-12-28) | I cannot believe for a second that people would really be so daft as to use dowsers to restore a sight like this. Were they thrown in jail for the act? |
