Rectangular enclosure
This enclosure, which measures 22.30 metres in length by 12.20 metres in width, seems to be the entrance chamber to a settlement dating back to the Talayotic period. For many years it was thought that this enclosure was an exterior wall which surrounded the settlement; however, archaeological excavation of the site has laid that theory to rest.
Research carried out during the 1980s produced the hypothesis that, in its initial function, the enclosure served as a defensive structure, with no internal partitions. At a later stage, two rooms were built with reused materials (remains of columns). These rooms were situated on either side of a central patio which was open to the sky and furnished with a built-in wall bench.
Both rooms were covered, perhaps by tree trunks and branches resting on a central column, which is still in tact. In the room to your right, the cooking hearth can still be seen. At the time the site was abandoned (3rd - 2nd century BC), these rooms were being used for domestic purposes, and remains of fauna have been unearthed from their substrata as well as pottery dating back to the Talayotic, Punic and Roman periods. |
