A vitrified timber-laced rampart, possibly double on the W side and single in the N; some evidence of a Pictish structure; two flat-bottomed ditches which may belong to the Pictish phase; a 12thC house structure on the Knoll; remains of a medieval castle/hall house with cobbled courtyard and later kitchen wing to the E; a 17th-18th century Fort Fiddes with surviving defence of earthen banks; a 19thC bowling green and a 20thC coastal observation post from the last wars. The larger flat area of the promontory has been ploughed in the 19th and early 20thC according to an estate map. A number of trenches were back-filled after excavation, the remainder were left open at the request of the landowner. |
