This site, high up on a hilltop ridge above Llamhamlach, commands panoramic views along the floodplains of the Usk river. The north-facing chamber of the tomb, with capstone in situ, lies just off-centre in a much denuded oval shaped mound 23.0 metres in length and 15.5 metres wide. Several upright stones outside the chamber may once have delineated a forecourt area suggesting that Ty Illtyd may have been a simple terminal chamber tomb. There is, however, some evidence that other chambers may once have existed. An interesting additional feature of Ty Illtyd is that several of the slabs forming the chamber bear incised crosses, some plain, some enclosed in lozenges and some doubled. These are believed to date to early mediaeval times.
