The EH Record of National Monuments says that the barrow, 29 m in diameter and 1.7 m high, was excavated in 1941-42. On Drivers Map of 1814 the barrow is labelled as "Coldpix's Cave", to the north of a track across Beaulieu Heath. The modern road passes close by to the north of the barrow, with one of the concrete roads of the Second World War airfield to the east. The name 'Cold Pixie's Cave' probably relates to folklore about 'Colt-pixies'; these were equine pixies that supposedly led ponies astray into the mires on the heath. |
