|It's a man holding a falcon. During the medieval time period & earlier only high noble person well allowed to participate in falconry--I think it's descriptive of his high stature|
|Formerly thought to be a falconer, it is now reckoned to be St John the Evangelist with his symbol - the eagle. The runes have never been fully translated. Bewcastle Cross is unique in that it is the only pre-Norman cross with a carved sundial and a hole for the gnomon.|
