Description This is the male sheela na gig to be found on the east wall of Abson church. There are also anglo-saxon knot design reused stones in the walls of the church.

This is interesting but not technically a sheela-na-gig, which are females displaying pudenda. This would be more accurately referred to as an ithyphallic exhibitionist figure (displaying an erect penis).

This location shouldn't really be on the Portal unless we're going to start accepting Shiela-na-gigs and similar. We could do but it would further blur the borders of the site...! Thoughts?

I recommend the church be added in light of its Saxon stonework; I'll pop this picture into the history gallery where there is at least one other. That way it will tie up with the site page, but be out of the main gallery.

I see what you mean about the stonework, very cross-like so I think it squeaks in. We can let this one through as we're listing the church.

Though they're far from megalithic I would like to see a section for Green Men and Sheelas, etc. (if we had room!) I wonder how many of us stone-lovers also take detours, when we're exploring, to visit churches to photograph these?

This is less than 5 miles from me. But as much as I think its brilliant, I dont think it should be here. We cant collect everything here, its far too new. There must be other specialised places for modern church stuff. And not just this.

perhaps we should have a proper discussion about what should / shouldnt be here in the forum or on a day out. Theres a damned good pub for such a discussion within a mile of this !

It is probably fitting that he should be banished to the outer reaches, ;)but it is interesting, especially as it shows continuance of use of stones from saxon times, and even the Captain did not know what was on his own doorstep....

The carvings are all probably pre-conquest so sneak under the wire but I agree we need to revisit what is acceptable for this site

"and even the Captain did not know what was on his own doorstep" Oh, I do know its there ! It appears in many books and stuff.
