Into the pit, landowner Jeff Cooper has collected several glacial boulders that were originally strewn in the field around the tumulus. These are smooth, pale coloured, water worn boulders, geologically quite dissimilar to lthe native sandstone.
Mrs Cooper points out that the site is inspected annually by English Heritage and they are obliged to maintain it. As keen historians, they are quite willing to do this.
The picture shows local Celtic historian, Frank Parker, looking for artifacts that might have been brought to the surface by badgers. There were numerous quartz pebbles in this pit. |
