It was founded by the Romans in the 2nd Century CE and was strengthened in Byzantine times under Emperor Justinian. It somehow survived until the 13th century when it finally succumbed during the Mongol Invasions. The main attraction was a shrine to the martyr Sergios. There were more than 8 churches in about 1 square Kilometer.
