Situated in the grounds of the village church that usurped the site, it
remains as a link to older times. At over twenty five feet tall and twenty
six tons, the menhir is the largest standing stone in the country. It's in-
yer-face and yet subtle. Brooding over the graveyard.
Sir William Strickland of Boynton found as much of the stone buried as
appears above ground (and a large quantity of skulls too!).
It is thought to have been quarried from Cayton Bay some ten miles
distant, around 2000 B.C.
The markings etched onto it?s surface have been interpreted by some to
be maps of the stars? |

(2004-06-08) | A bit of caution about the good Sir William and his conclusions! Apparently he only "probed" and certainly didn't dig down far enough to come to any unequivocal answer as to how much is below ground. It seems unlikely that the stone would be 50' long; there is simply no obvious need for half such a length to be underground.
