(2009-10-05) | These are toolmarks.
Almost all of the northern german megaliths have been destroyed,
the stones have been used to build bridges, churches, streets etc..
and war memorials. (but.. don't mention the war!)
Most stones have been splitted into smaller parts before use.
This one here didn't split the right way, it didn't split in halves on the backside.

(2009-10-05) | Instructive graphic....Yes, these are tool marks from historic destruction attempts. In the 19th century it was more easy: they made drillholes and used explosives instead. Approximately 95% of all megalithic tombs were destroyed especially in the 19th century. But nevertheless at least 1500 are (partly) preserved.
But the robbing of stones to abuse them for war memorials seems to be quite rare. Personally I do not recall any cases in the 20th century except for Nahne in Osnabrück (World War I) and one at Wanhöden. But I guess no megalithic tomb was abused to built a memorial for World War II. Of course a few were destroyed in the first post war years to use the stones as building materials.
