| Posted Comments: Bennett (2003-07-04) | Unusual inasmuch as it's one of very few cup&rings on these moors that is carved on the vertical face of the rock. In traditional cultures this would infer its ritual nature to be masculine (whatever that might entail!). Due to its close proximity to the Haystack Rock, the Map Stone and the neolithic walling which places it outside the prehistoric settlement to its immediate south (away from the huge prehistoric cemetery at Green Crag Slack, east of here), it is unlikely to have a ritual relationship with death-myths. The stone on which it is carved could possibly be a short standing stone. |
