Nether Largie South Cairn

Nether Largie South cairn is much earlier than the others, constructed around 3000BC. It is a chambered cairn similar to those found on Orkney ans elsewhere, with a large chamber divided by stone slabs into stalls. Like the long barrows of Southern England, chambered cairns are thought to have been the site of deposition of selected bones of the dead after excarnation, rather than whole bodies. They are the tombs of the ancestors plural. Later in prehistory burial practices changed. The other, later cairns at Kilmartin, more like round barrows in their usage. They are the burial mounds of a specific person or persons, interred as a whole body or a cremation within individual burial cists. |
