Contact them for permission to reproduce it. |  | | Description | The well’s sign says “With a tablet stone dated 1700 this well once had a reputation for healing weak and troubled eyes and supplied water for the local inhabitants. The name Bree comes from the Cornish word ‘bre’ which means hill and survives from the 15th and 16th century Priory administration, where ‘Breest’ appeared in account rolls of rent paying tenants showing the ‘hillside east’ was then occupied. Throughout the 19th century fever occurred sporadically every year, claiming victims in the town. A Rivers Commission report was made in 1872 and described the well as a ‘fairly good water’ although the analysis showed that it was highly contaminated and a possible source of fatal illnesses.” |
