| Posted Comments: AngieLake (2006-09-30) | Those entrance portals and lintel look pretty impressive, but I wouldn't care to go down there myself after seeing this set of pics! Thanks for making it possible to 'visit' Jim! (Perhaps all those tea-lights were lit simultaneously on one visit, to help someone as scared as me!) | JimChampion (2006-09-30) | Its a very easily accessible fogou due to the modern stepped entrance, although exploring its further reaches might be difficult if you are of large girth. The two main chambers are tall enough for me to stand upright. The pictures make it look a bit spooky but it was quite warm and quiet down there, and I spent an hour or so looking round and taking photos. | AngieLake (2006-09-30) | Not guilty of the 'large girth'!!... ha!ha!... just scared of dark caves!! | AngieLake (2006-10-01) | On the two occasions I've visited Newgrange in Ireland, I wondered how they coped with more 'portly' visitors, as that passage is very narrow at one point! Do they say "I'm sorry, but you wouldn't be able to get through." (..and then are they open to 'discrimination against larger people'??!) That'll be the day when some smart government dept decides to alter megalithic structures to enable access!....like some guy tried to do down here on Dartmoor. He wanted some kind of staircase or lift to be assembled at Hay Tor rocks so disabled people could get to the summit! It was chucked out by the planners. I'm 'able bodied', but even I've never climbed to the top, 'cause I'm scared of heights and wouldn't want to make the jump from rock to rock that you have to do to get there! (OK, so I'm an all-round wimp!) | KenWilliams (2006-10-01) | Newgrange has already been 'altered' to allow access, the area around the entrance was scooped out so they could put stairs over the kerbstones, this area is now walled with grey stone supposedly to make this fact obvious. They also removed the entire roof of the passage to straighten up some of the stones to allow easier access. | AngieLake (2006-10-01) | Sorry Ken - I guess that, of all ancient monuments, Newgrange is much different than it was originally. (That was a silly comment of mine, done too late at night!) However, I guess you can see what I'm getting at - the current craze for political correctness, and whether it will impact on the sites as we know them today? | Ethelwulf (2006-10-02) | Excellent impression of this claustrophobic entrance to the famous structure. In those distant times, people had a struggle to survive against nature, so no junk food obesity there! |
