Although Canyon de Chelly is a National Monument, it lies wholly within the Navajo Nation. The land is not deeded to the federal government. On the canyon floor there are many individually owned farms and homes. With a few exceptions a guide is required to tour the many ruins and rock art and to view the plants and geology from the canyon floor. Un-guided visitors are allowed to view the area from the canyon rim.
