Description  The well is just behind the part of the wall that juts out. Our landlady, who told us about this lovely church & well mentioned it’s remoteness, it’s other worldliness, the quietness, the sereneness and how you could just see the ladies in long black dresses and bonnets, trudging their way up the ancient footpath to worship.

What a beautiful, atmospheric place - it looks ancient! Were you able to go inside the church?

Yes indeed. We may just have been lucky but this 12th century church was open and just as wonderful inside. Resting across some pews was an old toboggan for dragging coffins over the snow to the graveyard. The graveyard is also home to one of the best gravestones I've ever found. It read “and when the earth shall claim thy bones, then shall you truly dance.”

That's very poetic! Thanks KiwiBetsy, your descriptions really brought it to life for me! ... must visit one day. I do love these little ancient churches. You've posted such a lot of interesting wells, etc, lately, too.

This gorgeous church was featured on Pagans and Pilgrims on BBC 4 tonight.
