Looking approx NE across the middle of the highest-and-driest of the hut circles towards the dam at Fernworthy Reservoir. Between it and the water is the second driest hut circle. These are exposed after long dry summers. (Or short, extremely hot summers, as July 2006 proved to be!)
The third, and nearest hut circle to the water, is just out of sight to centre right, behind the nearby tree.

(2012-08-27) | You can see the upright stones inside the outer ring of stones, mentioned in this paragraph on hut interiors, by Butler: "Another unusual feature appeared during the excavation of hut F Holne Moor, a concentric ring of slabs set on edge just inside the wall of the house, which Fleming interpreted as packing stones for a complete wooden cladding to its inner face. Such refinements have rarely been reported but a similar arrangement occurs at hut 2 Lowton Brook E and at Metherall circle 6, excavated by Worth.”
The stones lining Hut 5 at Metherall looked more complete, but perhaps were laid by later tinners? |
