Being a Prince of Stafford, on a trip to Ireland, he found a beautiful wife, daughter of a king. They returned to England; while she was in the pains of childbirth, Bertram had to leave her in a wood to seek midwifely assistance. On his return he found his wife, and child being consumed by wolves (which he chased off). The shock of this scene resolved him to renounce his Princely and worldly privileges, becoming a hermit, converting much of the area to Christianity. |
