| Posted Comments: thorgrim (2006-05-09) | Why do modern stone rows and circles always look so totally unconvincing? Is it because they lack the lichens and other patina of age or is it because they have been blasted from a quarry and installed by jcb. Perhaps this will look better in a few thousand years time. | AngieLake (2006-05-09) | With this one, I think its the unattractive 'blocky' shape of the stones that makes it less convincing. [Having said that, Merry Maidens are quite blocky - but shorter!] In the really ancient circles they are usually all different shapes and sizes (and heights). Also, they're much more weathered, naturally. The modern one on Ham Hill was quite impressive because of the varying shapes, but they tended to be about the same height, and were really massive - quite overpowering. Maybe that one will set our descendants thinking! (The Ranger I spoke to agreed that they might confuse it with really ancient ones one day, as WE may even be doing now as we look at some of our so-called 'ancient' circles!) |
