This is an ancient church, built in the 12th Century, most probably on the site of a timber church. It now stands in isolation, but was probably once part of a dark age/early medieval settlement.
The path to Din Lligwy passes through the field containing the church, so I was drawn to investigate.
Its really quite a marvellous place. There is an old tree in the church yard, which is hunched over a massive stone. The stone may be bedrock, but the thought passed my mind that it may be a fallen stone...... But then, I do think that about most large stones.
This one was between four and five feet long and three feet wide.
There is an interesting crypt in the church which you can walk down into; I had just visited Lligwy Burial Chamber, so this burial area in the church seemed so similar to the Burial Chamber, which you can also walk down into.
The views from the church down to the sea are stunning.
Lligwy is an incredible place, with three ancient places, showing continuous settlement from the bronze age through to the medieval ages. |
