A gathering of the Berth Archaeological Group on Saturday 25th March had the enormous pleasure of a guided talk by Ernie Jenks (right) who carried out the dig here in 1962/3.
One of the most unusual finds here at that time were some slave chains like those found at Llyn Cerrig Bach on Anglesey, showing the slave trade was alive and well in pre Roman Britain.
Here Ernie demonstrates with his own reconstruction of the chains, using himself and Portal Contributor VirtHist how the chains had collars, and would make the captives into a 'chain gang'.
The Berth lies well out of bounds on private land with several owners, and can only be accessed with permission. |

Seriously though it looks like a good meet and I'm sure that Ernie (Mr Jenks to you and me) provided invaluable insight to the Berth ancient settlement.
It is so important that all these regional events are pre-publicised and reported on the Portal so that we can all share the experience albeit via cyberspace with words and images.
