The relative calm of the middle kingdom once again allowed the construction of monumental buildings, though much of the skill of the old kingdom was lost. Amenmenhat IIIs first kingdom suffered from major problems and was abandoned in favour of a new Pyramid located near the village of Hawar in an area also called el-Lisht, where the new capital was built. It is built around a limestone core while the rest is of mud bricks. A shaft wide and tall enough for modern Europeans leads to the interior, although ground water from the nearby canal prevents excavation and access to the burial chamber.
There is a necropolis used for many more dynasties around the pyramid. |
